Date: 23 Sep 2023, Saturday | Time: 0945 - 1030 | Track Type: Plenary Lecture | Venue: L1-S1, Academia

Speaker: Prof Marco Aurelio de Anselmo Peres

The teeth and mouth are an integral part of the body, supporting and enabling essential human functions, and the mouth is a fundamental feature of personal identity. Good oral health reflects an individual’s ability to adapt to physiological changes throughout life and to maintain their own teeth and mouth through independent self-care. Despite being largely preventable, oral diseases are highly prevalent throughout life and have substantial negative effects on individuals, communities, and the wider society. Poor oral health in old adults may contribute to low self-esteem, decreased social interactions, malnutrition, dysphagia, and aspiration pneumonia. These problems significantly impact their daily lives and their families and caregivers. This talk will provide evidence on oral health-general health relationships and the impact of oral health on the quality of life of older people stressing the effort to strengthen the integration of oral health promotion and disease prevention.
