Power of Rehabilitation in Dementia Care: From Evidence to Practice, Service Delivery and Policy

Date: 23 Sep 2023, Saturday | Time: 0945 - 1030 | Track Type: Plenary Lecture | Venue: The NAK Auditorium, Academia

Speaker: Prof Yun-Hee Jeon

Living well with dementia can be successfully achieved by accessing rehabilitation interventions and best care practices that support the person’s ability to engage in physical and social activities as well as daily activities. Substantial evidence from research has shown the power of person-centred approaches and rehabilitation strategies, leading to improved well-being and self-care ability of the person with dementia, and potential long-term cost savings. However, major gaps exist in practice, service delivery and policy in Australia and internationally that support rehabilitation for people living with dementia. As part of the WHO Rehabilitation 2030 call for action, the WHO Rehabilitation Programme has developed its Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation (PIR) to support ministries of health around the globe in integrating rehabilitation services into health systems. Dementia is one of the 20 health conditions selected for this call for action. This presentation will address what is known about dementia rehabilitation interventions, efforts to translate rehabilitation knowledge into practice in dementia care and lessons learned from implementation research on dementia rehabilitation models of care. Strategies for implementing rehabilitation in routine care practices and service delivery, as well as policy implications will be discussed.
