Asst Prof Surana is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Molecular Genetics & Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell Biology at Duke University, where he also serves as the Scientific Director of the Duke Gnotobiotic Core. Dr. Surana is clinically active as a paediatric infectious diseases physician, and his laboratory-based research innovatively integrates gnotobiotic murine models, immunology, microbiology, and bioinformatic characterization of the microbiota. His overall goal is to identify specific commensal bacteria with immunomodulatory potential, characterize their mechanism of action, and develop novel microbiome-based therapies for immune-mediated diseases. His research has been recognized with numerous awards from the American Association of Immunologists, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society.
