Prof Paul J Foster

Prof Paul Foster is Professor of Ophthalmic Epidemiology and Glaucoma Studies at UCL’s Institute of Ophthalmology, and honorary consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Jointly, UCL IoO and Moorfields are ranked No. 1 globally for Ophthalmology research (CWUR). A graduate of Nottingham University Medical School, his residency training was at Oxford Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital. He has a PhD in epidemiology of glaucoma in East Asia. His current research interests include the epidemiology, environmental determinants, surgical management and prevention of glaucoma. Major research projects include:

  • PI: EPIC-Norfolk Eye Study: a cohort of 8,623 people aimed at investigating novel environmental and genetic factors in eye disease
  • Consortium Lead - UK Biobank Eye and Vision Consortium (eye and vision data on 130,000 people)
  • ZAP study: (China) A randomised, controlled trial of prophylactic laser iridotomy in 890 high risk individuals in China
  • Project HERCULES – The Healthcare Exemplar for Recovery from COVID19 Using Linear Examination Systems, is a multi-faculty collaboration across UCL, with Moorfields Eye Hospital and Ubisense, testing factors that influence efficiency and COVID safety in high volume outpatient diagnostic hubs. The Brent Cross HERCULES lab has delivered 25,000 Moorfields NHS patient appointments to date.

Prof Foster has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, 16 book chapters and 7 journal editorials. He has co-authored two policy-defining clinical trial manuscripts in The Lancet, 10 papers in Nature titled journals, and has been awarded £ 38.5M in research grant funding. He was elected a member of the Glaucoma Research Society, which is limited to 100 active members worldwide, promoting excellence in glaucoma research. He was also voted among the 100 most influential ophthalmologists worldwide in 2014, 2016 and 2023 by The Ophthalmologist magazine. He has received awards recognising his contribution to ophthalmology in the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and China.
