Asst Prof Cheng Eng Teck Samuel

Senior Consultant, Psychological Medicine, Changi General Hospital

I am a psychiatrist and psychotherapist working in Changi General Hospital. I am passionate about the Psychodynamic approach in the treatment of psychiatric patients as well as a way of understanding people. Together the various schools of Psychodynamic thinking present a sophisticated and integrated understanding of the complexities of being human.

There are few Psychodynamic Therapists in Singapore. As such, I joined CGH in 2009 with the specific aim of developing Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. I have set up a training program in our department and have trained a number of psychiatrists and psychologists. I have also set up in CGH a mini-Therapeutic Community program which serves patients with complex needs.

My long term goal is to bring Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training in Singapore to international standards. To this end, I am currently working with my team to bring ISTDP (Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy) training and IGA (Institute of Group Analysis) training to Singapore.

To further equip myself to train others, I have completed the international 3-year core group training in ISTDP in Europe as well as a further 3-year program in the Training of Trainers in ISTDP. I am currently conducting the 3-year core training program in CGH which is attended by psychiatrists and psychologists from other hospitals as well.

Outside of work, I have helped set up Elijah House Singapore, an organization that trains lay counselors in churches with the aim to integrate counseling with prayer/spirituality. We conduct training schools run an internship program.
