Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesiologists evaluate, monitor and supervise patient care before, during and after surgery, delivering anesthesia, leading the Anesthesia Care Team and ensuring optimal patient safety.

Our anaesthesiologists support close to 300,000 anaesthestic cases annually (51% of the total anaesthetic cases in Singapore). We support the following clinical sites:

  • Sengkang General Hospital
  • KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital
  • National Cancer Centre Singapore
  • National Dental Centre Singapore
  • National Heart Centre

Intensive Care

Intensive care physicians treat patients who have any medical or surgical illness or operation that requires critical care support- generally life-threatening major illnesses or operations where high level life support is required. Our intensivist covers clinical sites such as Surgical ICU (SICU) in both SGH and CGH, Neurosurgical ICU (NICU) and Burns ICU (BICU) in SGH.

Clinical services provided by the Intensive Care team:

  • Management of shock states (Distributive, hypovolemic and their complications.
  • Provision of vasopressor and inotropic therapy, with advanced hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory failure.
  • Management of complications of renal failure with provision of dialysis support.
  • Provision of enteral/ parenteral nutritional support.
  • ICU support of the immunosuppressed patient.
  • Management of sepsis, hospital acquired and opportunistic infections.
  • Management of acute gastrointestinal, genitourinary and obstetric-gynecologic disorders.
  • Preoperative and postoperative care of liver transplant donors and recipients.
  • Management of multiple system trauma and burns.
  • Management of neurosurgical emergencies such as raised intracranial pressure, traumatic and nontraumatic intracranial bleeds.
  • Perioperative management of patients undergoing neurologic surgery.

Pain Medicine

Our Pain Physicians offer a holistic and comprehensive approach to Pain Medicine, providing quality and evidence-based acute and chronic pain management to our patients. SGH Pain Management Centre is the first and largest in Singapore to serve patients with chronic, disabling pain disorders. The centre helps patients to restore function and manage chronic pain, using a multi-pronged approach by addressing medical, physical and psychological aspects of pain. The one-stop centre is staffed by a team of internationally trained pain specialists, dedicated pain nurses, physiotherapists and psychologists. The Pain Management Centre is also the only training unit outside of Australia and New Zealand , and accredited by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Faculty of Pain Medicine to provide approved training for Pain Medicine.

We assist patients suffering from pain caused by a variety of conditions. Some of these pain syndromes include headaches, orofacial pain, neck and back pain, herniated discs, arthritis, myofascial pain, postherpetic neuralgia, chronic post-surgical or post-traumatic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, painful diabetic neuropathy and cancer pain.

We offer a comprehensive range of services for patients with chronic pain. In addition to common treatments such as epidural injections, nerve blocks and trigger point injections, we also perform more advanced interventions such as radiofrequency thermoablation, neurostimulation as well as intrathecal drug delivery system.

Perioperative Medicine

Perioperative medicine is the medical care of patients before, during, and after any surgical procedure involving anaesthesia. It involves an integrated, planned and personalised approach to patient care from the time of contemplation of surgery through the operative period to full recovery.

Hyperbaric Medicine

The Hyperbaric & Diving Medicine Centre in SGH is the first comprehensive and integrated facility in Singapore serving the civilian community. The centre is led by a team of specialists, and is equipped with facilities to manage the full spectrum of clinical and diving medicine indications.

The key services provided by the Hyperbaric & Diving Medicine Centre include:

  • Hyperbaric & Diving Medicine Consultation
  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
  • Problem Wound Management
  • 24-hour service for Diving Emergencies

  • Problem wounds (poor healing wounds)
  • Decompression sickness (diving injuries)
  • Late radiation injury (soft tissue and bony injuries)

  • Acute traumatic ischaemic conditions(crush injuries, compartment syndrome)
