Escape games have emerged as a dynamic, evidence-based strategy to enhance experiential learning and clinical reasoning in healthcare. By embedding patient scenarios into immersive, challenge-based formats, they promote critical thinking, teamwork, and decision-making under pressure. Yet many educators lack a structured approach to designing these gamified experiences. This workshop offers a step-by-step framework to create interactive designs aligned with educational objectives and best practices. Participants will explore key design principles and collaboratively build their own mini escape game during the session. Whether you are a novice or experienced simulationist, this session offers both inspiration and structure for those passionate about transforming education through gamified learning.

Following this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the pedagogical value and cognitive impact of escape games in medical training
  2. Identify essential components of an effective escape game (objectives, storyline, scenario, challenges, debrief)
  3. Design a draft escape game prototype aligned with specific learning objectives using the provided worksheet template
  4. Apply gamification and active learning strategies to enhance engagement, realism, and retention
  5. Collaborate to co-create challenges and adapt game complexity to various learner levels
