Many healthcare providers dealing with chronic conditions such as skin conditions, asthma, and diet management, may struggle with engaging and motivating patients to implement the behaviour change necessary in their daily routines and lifestyle. In the KKH Department of Child Development, Allied Health Professionals assess and provide intervention for children who have developmental, behavioural, and learning concerns. With the limited number of intervention hours, we need to work closely with caregivers in setting collaborative goals, and motivate empower them to carry out the strategies at home or as part of their daily routine in order to improve child outcomes.

The Relational Invitational Approach (RIA) is a practice framework that enables AHPs and other healthcare professionals to engage other adults in the process of behaviour change. The full RIA Training is available in the form of a two-day hybrid workshop. This practical hands-on workshop provides an overview of RIA, including the principles underlying the approach. Participants will then be brought through two specific strategies (concern development strategies, and the use of questions to evaluate whether a person is likely to adopt a particular new behaviour), which are practical tools that will help healthcare providers better engage and collaborate with their patients and caregivers during the clinic session.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Illustrate examples on application of the foundational principles of the Relational Invitational Approach in their own context.
  • Apply two strategies from the Relational Invitational Approach in their work with patients / caregivers.

Target Audience:

Healthcare providers who work directly with patients or caregivers in non-urgent medical care, especially for chronic conditions.
