To Err is Human - Is it Possible to Overcome It with Reflection and Narratives?

Date: TBC | Time: TBC | Track Type: Main Conference Workshop | Venue: TBC

Speakers: Dr Ekstrom Victoria Sze Min

In this intensive 90-minute workshop, medical educators will explore cognitive biases with an emphasis on anchoring biases and diagnosis momentum. The workshop introduces narrative medicine as a transformative tool, empowering educators to develop metacognition in their students and residents. By fostering an understanding of when to apply heuristic-based thinking (System 1) and when to engage in analytical reasoning (System 2), educators can serve as guides for learners navigating complex clinical scenarios.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the impact of cognitive errors on medical decisions.
  • Use narratives to reflect and recall upon experiences with diagnostic errors caused by cognitive biases and contextual factors.
  • Teach students/residents effective educational strategy for teaching recognition, analysis, and avoidance of cognitive bias in diagnostic error in residency education.

Target Audience:

This workshop is designed for medical educators, preceptors, and mentors responsible for guiding medical students and residents. It is ideal for those seeking innovative approaches to coaching learners through cognitive biases. No specific prerequisites are required, making it accessible to educators at all levels.
