In the provision of patient-centered care, healthcare professionals face a challenging triad that is analogous to the classical “Three-Body Problem” in physics, whereby any shifts in the dynamics of medical knowledge, patient empathy and technological innovations can tip the balance of healthcare education and practice. Drugs/Medications are often caught in the dichotomy of being both “heroes” and “villains”, which underscores the necessity of a balanced, informed, and empathetic approach to patient care.

This symposium aims to address this intricate “Three-Body Problem” faced by the younger “Generation Techno” healthcare professionals, as they navigate patient experiences of medication therapy in a digitally advanced world. We demonstrate how we drew inspiration from the popular novel and Netflix series to integrate the dynamic interplay between the science of pharmacotherapy, the art of empathy and narrative competence, and the advancement of healthcare technologies to harmonise the diverse, yet interconnected domains of medication management, medical humanities, and digital health in an emerging field known as Digital Health Humanities.

In this session, you will hear from an interdisciplinary panel on our collective efforts to address this “Three-Body Problem”. We will reveal a novel project that blends the rigour of medical science with the nuanced understanding of patient narratives, and the cutting-edge potential of digital innovations like Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) and the Metaverse, to create a holistic, patient-centered approach to medications management. Join us, as we explore how imagination, innovation, and a little bit of M.A.G.I.C., can potentially foster an environment where our emerging healthcare professionals are not only knowledgeable in their science, but can also be skilled in connecting with patients on a human level through narrative storytelling and creative visualisation, while leveraging the latest digital tools.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the concepts and applications of medical humanities, art therapy, narrative competence and digital health humanities;
  • Understand the concepts and applications of the Metaverse in healthcare;
  • Gain an insight into how creative visualisation, generative AI, and prompt engineering can be used in healthcare practice.

Target Audience:

This is a foundation session for healthcare professionals/educators who want to know more about the emerging field of Digital Health Humanities through the intersection of the medical sciences, medical humanities, and digital health. There is no pre-requisite in terms of knowledge/experience.
