Faculty development (FD) is a vexatious topic for many leaders working in the domain of health professions education (HPE). In our context, FD is often operationalised in the form of workshops or courses. While in principle, these can improve educator competencies and change behaviours, oftentimes, sustained behavioural change may not be observed and the organisation’s educational practices, and capabilities do not become transformed. Given that time-starved HPE educators can ill-afford to attend low-yield FD programmes, what can we do to make faculty development great again? Through this symposium, we hope to stimulate reflection, questions and answers about improving FD. The presenters will provide stimulus in the form of FD research findings as well as practical strategies to help participants chart and navigate their own paths toward FD success and excellence.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • List FD activities beyond attending workshops/courses
  • Understand how educator communities of practice are a valuable FD resource
  • Apply frameworks that shift faculty development outcomes beyond skills acquisition to development of educator identity
  • Apply the Singhealth-DukeNUS Educator Development Framework and the Educator Pathway to develop themselves as educators in a deliberate manner.

Target Audience:

Healthcare professionals and health professions educators interested in faculty development issues.
