The application of content and methods from the arts and humanities in healthcare and medical education have gained popularity in the past decade to investigate illness narratives and nurture professional identity formation of healthcare professionals (HCP).  The SingHealth Duke-NUS Medical Humanities Institute (SDMHI) was set up in 2023 to increase awareness and promote collaboration amongst stakeholders across different sectors to promote humanistic patient care, and foster wellbeing for HCPs across all health professions.

In the first 60 minutes, this symposium will examine the arts and humanities in the context of the health professions, and why the humanities are important to healthcare. We then explore narrative medicine, as well as the humanities and medical ethics. We briefly illustrate how the arts and humanities can be integrated into healthcare education, before ending with a description of what the SDMHI is, and how it can promote humanistic patient care and foster wellbeing for HCPs.

For the next 30 minutes, a facilitated panel discussion will be conducted as a platform for reflection, discussion, and sharing of ideas and initiation of collaborations both within and beyond the academic medicine centre.

This symposium will be of interest to participants of the conference from any health profession who are keen to understand and explore the role of the arts and humanities in (a) healthcare education, (b) professional and personal development, and/or (c) opportunities for collaborative projects and research.
