Interprofessional education (IPE) aims to educate healthcare professionals to be better collaborators by enabling them to learn with, from, and about each other, to deliver improved healthcare through team-based interprofessional care (IPC). Optimal collaboration between partners would support the promotion of health and delivery of quality healthcare across the continuum of care. However, the benefits of this team-based approach leading to tangible effect on healthcare outcomes can be difficult to measure. Evaluation of these initiatives through the systematic collection of information about the activities, characteristics, and outcomes can help improve programme effectiveness and inform decisions about future interventions. Utilisation-focussed Evaluation (UFE) enhance the use of findings and processes to inform these decisions and optimise performance. It is conducted for, and with, specific intended primary users and specific intended uses. It incorporates programme evaluation models, theories and methods, but does not advocate for one over another.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the different methods that can be used to evaluate different types of IPE/IPC programme/initiative.
  • Discuss the importance of choosing the appropriate programme evaluation method for the type of IPE/IPC programme/initiative.
  • Select the appropriate programme evaluation method for the type of IPE/IPC programme/initiative and its learners/audience.
  • Demonstrate the value of programme evaluation for educational interventions through examination of a case on an IPE/IPC initiative.

Target Audience:
