Healthcare educators juggle multiple roles as teachers, mentors and adhoc wellbeing supporters, while nurturing learners and caring for patients. Learning environments are integrated with the workplace and can therefore be volatile, complex and uncertain. Finding the balance between self-care and learner-care is important to manage stress, stay focused and foster a sense of calm. A healthy learning environment achieves learning goals as well as fosters a sense of wellbeing.

This workshop aims to provide healthcare educators with tools to build and sustain healthy learning environments by integrating simple present moment practices that encourage educators and learners to pause, take perspective and reflect on their sphere of influence that guides them to let go of strongly held beliefs, build healthy relationships and even influence how they communicate with each other. Participants will experience mindfulness practices that they can use in the workplace and learning environments to stay intentional in their habits around self-care, learner support and learner trust. These practices can be applied in their own lives, used regularly in the teaching environment, and be taught to their learners and team members to reinforce mindfulness skills and cultivate longer term impact.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Reflect on their beliefs and values in supporting their learners wellbeing.
  • Describe types of mindfulness practices to manage stress and improve focus.
  • Reflect on overcoming challenges in applying mindfulness practices in learning environments.
  • Apply appropriate mindfulness practices in learning environments.

Target Audience:

Healthcare educators and administrators who are looking for ways to be more self-aware and develop practices to support their own wellbeing and that of their learners in a fast-paced work environment.
