The inaugural Scientific Meeting celebrates the establishment of a dedicated centre for memory and cognitive disorders, bringing together specialist expertise within SingHealth to offer integrated and multidisciplinary care at multiple sites across the SingHealth institutions. The key focus of the Scientific Meeting is on dementia, in the lead up to World Alzheimer’s Day which is on 21 September every year.
The theme of the Scientific Meeting is timely identification and diagnosis of dementia, in selected patients, biomarkers may be used to aid diagnosis even before the patients develop symptoms of forgetfulness or have problems with their daily function. Early diagnosis and treatment can help slow down the progression of the disease and enable both the patients and their caregivers to prepare, seek support and resources to manage the disease better, and more importantly, avoid caregiver burn out.
The Scientific Meeting is held over two days. The first day on 17 September discusses the clinical aspects and management of dementia, targeted at healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses and allied health. Both healthcare professionals and the public can attend the second day on 18 September to learn more about managing the symptoms of dementia, providing support to persons with dementia. The benefits of exercise go beyond reducing the risk of dementia, it also provides opportunity for bonding between the persons with dementia and their caregivers.

The SingHealth Duke−NUS Memory and Cognitive Disorder Centre was established in March 2020 to provide integrated multidisciplinary clinical practice for cognitively impaired patients, promote health services, advance innovative cutting-edge research and introduce educational programmes for medical professionals and the public.
The virtual centre brings together the strengths and expertise of healthcare professionals from neurology, psychiatry, geriatric medicine, internal medicine, primary care and community care across SingHealth institutions, so patients can receive the right care, at the right time and place. Collaboration with researchers and educators from SingHealth institutions and Duke-NUS, will deepen knowledge in the causes of cognitive impairment, drive innovation to find better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat conditions and ensure healthcare professionals have the skills they need to provide the best care for patients.
The Centre will also serve as a hub to promote closer collaboration with various community partners to provide holistic and financially viable dementia services.
Head of the Centre is Dr Simon Ting who is currently a Senior Consultant at National Neuroscience Institute. He is a strong advocate for the provision of holistic dementia care through a multidisciplinary model of care. Dr Ting completed his HMDP fellowship in Behavioural Neurology and Dementia at the University of California. He sub-specialises in neurobehavioral syndromes and dementia.
