Dr Tang Chao Tian, Consultant, Department of Psychiatry, SKH, explained that insomnia is characterised by the dissatisfaction with sleep quality or quantity, occurring at least three nights a week over three months. He emphasised the importance of sleep for both physical and mental health, highlighting various factors that can impact sleep. Jetaime Muk, Psychologist, Department of Psychology, SKH, noted that many patients struggle with the vicious cycle of anxiety and not being able to fall asleep. Treatment options for insomnia include medication and psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), which equips patients with relaxation techniques to promote sleep. Jetaime also stressed the importance of maintaining good sleep hygiene to achieve restful sleep.
