Clinical event debriefing offers a healthcare team the opportunity to re-examine the clinical encounter, discuss individual and team performance, identify errors, and develop performance improvement strategies through a reflective learning process. We strongly feel that it is important but not done frequently enough. We hope to promote and advance quality clinical debriefing in the clinical environment in emergency departments and other healthcare settings.

This practical hands-on workshop is for healthcare professionals who would like to learn more about clinical debriefing in a fast paced clinical environment. We will be introducing you to tools and techniques you can use to carry out debriefing after a clinical encounter whilst ensuring psychological safety of your healthcare team. Clinical debriefing allows for workflow, processes and systems improvement to be carried out in a safe learning environment.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe when clinical debriefing should be done
  • Identify the key elements of clinical debriefing
  • List tools used in Clinical Debriefing
  • Explain the elements of psychological safety
  • Reflect on practice of Good debrief
  • Discuss the barriers that may occur during Clinical Debriefing and their respective solutions

Target Audience:

Nurses and doctors who are keen to carry out clinical debriefing in a fast paced clinical environment, e.g. Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit or Operating Theatre. No prior experience needed.
