Short Courses

These short courses will be offered at intervals throughout the year. Emails will be sent out advertising the courses and inviting registration:

Introduction to R

R is a programming language and software that is used for statistical analysis and data visualization.
R has an effective data handling and storage facility, a suite of operators for calculations on arrays, in particular matrices. R also has a large, coherent, integrated collection of intermediate tools for data analysis, graphical facilities for data analysis and display either direcly at the computer or in hard copy.

R to powers the internal data dashboard to help make better data-driven decisions. R is frequently used in healthcare setting to help analyze, model and make predictions and forecasts using their data.
R is a free programme and open source programming language that is available for everyone to use. This makes R a convenient tool to use in a healthcare setting.

Python programming
Python is a programming language that lets you work more quickly and integrate your systems more effectively. It is an interpreted, high-level, general-purpose programming language for small and large-scale projects.

REDcap
Participants will learn about the application process for SingHealth REDCap projects (intranet only), the design of data collection forms, longitudinal data collection techniques and methods for import and export of data.

Introduction to Health Services Research

Health Services Research (HSR) is the study of how social factors, financing systems, medical technologies and personal behaviors affect access, cost and quality of healthcare. The goal of HSR is to improve the performance of health services and it emphasis populations rather than individuals. To increase awareness of and inspire more HSR in SingHealth we conduct introductory seminars with case studies from SingHealth.

Citizen Data Science
Students will be exposed to the foundation concepts, case studies and applications, some mathematics behind data science models and algorithms. There will also be practical sessions for model development, training, validation and tests. Students will acquire new knowledge of data science techniques. The new knowledge from this course will enable predictions to be made about likely diagnoses, prognoses of health conditions and risks of adverse events.

Implementation Science
This course will provide an understanding of the processes and factors that lead to successful integration of evidence-based interventions into a healthcare setting. Effective training for implementation science will allow health care professionals to rapidly innovate with poorly performing services and apply the latest evidence to existing services.

The Data Science and Implementation Science courses are jointly organised by Duke-NUS and SingHealth in collaboration with Duke University.

Plus Data Science

The Plus Data Science workshop is a 5 days workshop customised for the healthcare industry. Each day, participants will learn about different area of machine learning. Participants will gain access to machine learning with applications to clinical and health services research, value based healthcare.

Important applications such as Deep Learning in image analyses, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for image analysis, capabilites beyond human performance for image analyses will be discussed. Generative models, adversarial learning, and reinforcement learning motivated from a clinical and health services perspective will also be shared. In depth machine learning methods for natural language processing, concepts, case studies, applications and mathematics behind algorithms will be included as practical steps for participants to understand. The workshop also includes hands on sessions to implement specific models and cases that are in use at Singapore and Duke University.

Rapid HTA for service planning workshop
Health Technology Assessment (HTA) refers to the systematic evaluation of properties, effects, and/or impacts of health technology. It is a multi-disciplinary process to evaluate the social, economic, organizational and ethical issues of a health intervention or health technology.

HTA is a useful tool to assess evidence-based decision-making and service planning, and is an essential course for preparing attendees for applying the Hospital Services Development Programme (HSDP). In this course, we will equip attendees with the knowledge of resouces and other consideration for service planning. This course caters for both the support team and project directors.
