Ms Karen Perera

Director, Office of Patient Experience, Singapore General Hospital


Ms Perera graduated from School of Nursing (Singapore) as a registered nurse in 1985 and did Post Basic in Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing from 1990 – 1991.  After obtaining the Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) in 1999, she attended a 12-week training in King’s College Hospital, United Kingdom, on Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery. She also attained Master of Health Science (Management) from University of Sydney and SingHealth Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management & Leadership course in 2010.

Ms Perera has profound nursing experience in clinical, administration and clinical quality areas.  Her research interests are wide ranged and include post-surgical care, patient safety and quality improvement in healthcare. Morever, her research papers were published in SGH Proceedings and presented at various conferences and scientific meetings.

Currently, the Office of Patient Experience is supported by Ms Karen Perera as its Director. With 35 years of nursing experience and extensive experience in clinical care, administration and clinical quality she spearheads patient experience enhancement. Is instrumental in driving key initiatives such as building a psychologically safe environment in SGH through TeamSPEAKTM training, safety and quality management, and actively advocating process improvement and change. Is also a faculty member of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute for Patient Safety & Quality and conducts training on TeamSPEAKTM, TeamTHRIVETM and TeamSTEPPS.
