Prof Nobutaro Ban

Professor, Family Medicine, Medical Education, Aichi Medical University


Dr Ban is a professor of Medical Education Center at Aichi Medical University. He is a family physician who completed a three-year residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, from 1980-1983. After coming back to Japan in 1983, Dr Ban has dedicated to introduce primary care speciality into Japan. First at the National Nagasaki Chuo Hospital for six years, then for 9 years at Kawasaki Medical School, and then for 19.5 years at the Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, where he directed family medicine and primary care education and practice. Then he moved to the Aichi Medical University School of Medicine.

Dr Ban has conducted educational research, developed curricula and written many articles in peer-reviewed journals about physician-patient communication, assessment, particularly OSCE which he introduced to Japan for the first time, being used in all the medical school curricula in Japan. He has also authored and co-authored articles on primary care. He has been a leader in the Japan Society for Medical Education (JSME) being the president from 2009 to 2016 and conducted a numerous lectures and workshops on medical education as well.
