Mdm Sumasri Kallakuri

Teaching & Learning Mentor, School of Chemical & Life Sciences, Diploma in Optometry, Singapore Polytechnic

Sumasri Kallakuri is currently a Teaching & Learning Mentor at the School of Chemical & Life Sciences, Singapore Polytechnic (SP). Prior to joining SP, she worked as a clinical optometrist and researcher in India. Since 2008, she is involved in teaching the Diploma in Optometry students at SP. As an educator, Sumasri is an advocate of active learning pedagogies to engage learners. She has successfully implemented Case Method, which is an effective pedagogy in developing the desired professional dispositions, such as self-directed learning, critical thinking and collaborative skills in optometry students.

She has supported the implementation of the work-based learning model which is designed to help students to be highly self-motivated, well organised, and able to integrate complex themes from multiple perspectives in real time. Her current focus is on blended-learning and development of self-directed and engaged learners in the online setting. She believes that the best reward for an educator is to see the transformation of students into graduates who are self-motivated life-long learners.
