Hypertension affects 1 in 3 adult Singaporeans, and is a major contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Despite the availability of numerous blood pressure medications, a large majority of people with hypertension have uncontrolled blood pressure. Left untreated leads to left ventricular hypertrophy, vascular remodeling, increased risk of arrhythmias and heart failure. While it is known that high sodium intake contributes to increased risk of hypertension, dietary salt intake in Singapore remains well above the recommended levels by World Health Organisation. In addition, we hope to present novel information on the role of dietary potassium in development of hypertension. Up to 20% of all patients with hypertension suffer from an underlying condition, Primary Aldosteronism (PA). Patients with PA are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, and suffer from poorer quality of life. Furthermore, PA can potentially be curable, leading to improvement or cure of hypertension altogether. We will share on the importance of this condition, and newer modalities to diagnose and treat these patients.
