This presentation introduces the technical foundations of large language models (LLMs) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for a clinical audience. It gives an overview of how LLMs operate – its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats when applied to clinical research and clinical care in liver diseases. It highlights ongoing issues related to accuracy, bias, privacy, and transparency in clinical applications. Finally, the presentation will discuss several emerging application areas and use-cases for GenAI technologies in both hepatology clinical research and clinical care.
