Emergency Medicine Innovation Plenary
Three Models of Translating Innovation to the Bedside

Date: 19 Sep 2025, Friday | Time: 1310 — 1355| Track Type: Plenary Lecture | Venue: The NAK Auditorium, Academia

Speaker: Prof Ong Eng Hock, Marcus

Translating innovation to the bedside is always a challenge. In this talk, we explore three models to cross the 'valley of death', based on the speaker's experiences with Emergency Medicine innovation and translation.

Model 1: Clinical innovation and dissemination (Hair Apposition Technique, a surgical technique invented by the speaker which has been adopted internationally). Model 2: Bench research to bedside (the journey of aiTriage, which is now an HSA-approved Software as a Medical Device/SaMD). Model 3: Collaboration with industry and commercialisation (the invention of Carboncool, which is now the standard of care for treatment of heat stroke in the Singapore Armed Forces and across Asia). In this session, we will explore lessons learnt and challenges to overcome, which might be useful for the innovators of the future.
