Programme Details:

This panel brings together people with a range of disabilities, centering their voices in healthcare research and practice. The medical field is often dominated by clinician-centric research and data-driven outcomes, and the lived experiences of patients are frequently overlooked. This panel aims to fill this gap by providing a platform for disability advocates to share their lived experiences and make recommendations for furthering healthcare research, practice, and policy.

Each panelist offers a unique perspective shaped by their specific disabilities, ranging from physical disabilities (muscular dystrophy,) perceptual disabilities (deafness and blindness), to cognitive disabilities (Autism and ADHD). These voices are essential in forging progress within the Medical Humanities, so that important needs and preferences prioritized in healthcare advancement. By calling attention to the lived experiences of disabled individuals, this panel advocates for a more inclusive approach to healthcare research and practice: one that promotes patient-centeredness in a multidisciplinary field. Dialogue between researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and voices of the disabled is necessary as we grow as a medical community.
