The COVID-19 pandemic has had extensive impact on the health systems globally. As part of the Global Surgery Programme, Global Health Initiative – Pandemic Response received a generous gift towards the development of innovative models of care and research that look into devising better systems to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and future pandemics.
There are two key focus areas, namely, the study into pandemic impact to build resilience now and for the future, and innovation and innovative models of care that can be used in this pandemic and beyond. This will also shape and drive informed decisions during a pandemic and address the well-being of healthcare workers and affected patients.
Current Status of Projects as of 2024
1) Response and Outcome Analysis of Tertiary Surgical Unit in AsiaPhase 1: Qualitative study of the impact of COVID-19 on surgical care and the response strategies completed. Phase 2: Ongoing study to quantify the impact across 4 workstreams:

2) The Perspectives and Well-being of Healthcare Workers, Migrant Workers and the General Population during COVID-19
Healthcare Workers: Data collection, analyses, and manuscript preparation have been completed. Seven manuscripts were accepted for publication.
Migrant Workers: The study team explored potentially extending the study to investigate the health and wellbeing of migrant workers in Singapore after the pandemic and whether stressors have changed with time. A quantitative survey as well as a qualitative interview guide have been developed.
General Population: Data collection for all three sites (Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam) has been completed. Two manuscripts were accepted for publication.
3) Innovation and Innovative Care Fund – Telemedicine Centre
Between November 2020 and March 2023, 4,751 video consults have been conducted by healthcare providers across 11 departments in the Division of Surgery & Surgical Oncology (DSSO).
