L2 IMPACT! Developing Posters And Abstracts (ESSENTIAL)

The single term ‘Abstracts’ is used to refer to more than one academic writing in different contexts. In the context of a manuscript, it refers to the summary of a journal article. In the context of conferences, it refers to posters or oral presentations. This workshop will look only at posters as presentation skills fall outside its scope.

While posters created for a conference differ in critical ways from abstracts written for a manuscript (e.g. one allows for references, the other does not), they also share certain similarities (e.g. small word count).

At this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the differences that will help them adopt the right strategies for each type of abstract appropriately. They will also engage in tasks that will hone their skills to write concisely and discuss how to avoid the common pitfalls associated with writing abstracts.

Using these principles of good writing, they will revise and edit their own abstracts for clarity and concision. Feedback will be given in the form of peer review.

NOTE: This workshop caters to educational research abstracts.

Learning Objectives

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify the similarities and differences between manuscript abstracts and posters.
Delineate the principles of clear and concise writing.
Revise and edit their own abstracts for clarity and concision.

Pre-requisites

Applicants are required to submit a copy of their own EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH abstracts upon registration.
Applicants are expected to have a laptop with Microsoft suite as workshop activities will be presented using Microsoft PowerPoint or Microsoft Word.

This ½-day workshop is chargeable at S$250, subjected to prevailing GST rates.
