Distinguished Arthur Lim Professorship in Ophthalmology

The Arthur Lim Professorship was established to recognise distinguished clinicians who have contributed significantly to the training of medical students, clinicians and clinician scientists in the field of Ophthalmology, and to recognise outstanding academics for their pre-eminence in academic medicine and research.

Promoting Academic Medicine and Research

Professor Gemmy Cheung is a clinician scientist with special interest in retina diseases. The focus of her research is aimed to improve management outcomes and reducing blindness from age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She has led major position papers and guidelines for the diagnosis and management for AMD. The Phenotyping Asian AMD study was established by Professor Cheung in 2009. This cohort provides one of the richest clinical, imaging, and genetic datasets of Asian AMD worldwide, and has attracted numerous international collaborations. In 2018, her team was awarded an open fund-large collaborative grant by the Singapore National Medical Research Council, through which she established the ongoing Translational Asian AMD program (TAAP). Professor Cheung coordinates the large multidisciplinary team which approaches the unmet needs in AMD through five interlinked platforms including population health, basic science, imaging, therapeutics and quality of life. Concurrently, in her capacity as head of retinal research group, Professor Cheung has established a vibrant platform for exchanges between scientists and clinicians, and has opened abundant training opportunities for fellows, researchers and PhD students.

Teaching and Education

Professor Cheung is considered a role model for young aspiring ophthalmologists, especially young women embarking on their career path. Professor Cheung has delivered numerous invited lectures internationally and has trained many fellows and PhD students. Her service to the ophthalmology community includes council member of the Asia-pacific vitreoretinal society, regional advisor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Exco member of the International Retinal Imaging Society and the Asia-Pacific Ocular Imaging Society and credentialing committee member of the prestigious Macula Society.
