Doxycycline - What is it for

Doxycycline is a tetracycline-type antibiotic that is used to eliminate bacteria that cause certain types of infection, including pneumonia, venereal diseases and may be used for malaria prophylaxis. Doxycycline is also commonly used in dermatology for conditions such as acne or rosacea.    

Doxycycline - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Doxycycline cause?

  • Nausea or upset stomach. Take the medication with meals or a light snack.
  • Diarrhoea, itching of the rectum or vagina, sore mouth or skin rash. If symptoms are severe or persist for more than two days, contact your doctor.
  • Sun sensitivity.  You are advised to adequately protect your skin from the sun e.g with sunscreen

Before taking Doxycycline, what precautions must I follow?

  • Doxycycline should not be taken by young children, pregnant women or nursing mothers. Contact doctor if you are pregnant while taking doxycycline.
  • Certain medications such as antacids (containing aluminum or magnesium) or calcium-, iron- or zinc-containing products may decrease the absorption of doxycycline. So, take doxycycline 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking them.
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist before taking other medicines while you on it.

How should Doxycycline be used?

​Doxycycline is usually taken once or twice a day.

Doxycycline comes as a capsule. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water and remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking to reduce the risk of oesophageal irritation. Take with food to minimise stomach upset.; unless instructed otherwise.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

​Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. Take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals.
