Emtricitabine/Tenofovir

Drug Class: Commonly Known As: Category:
Antiretroviral Agent Truvada® Adult

Emtricitabine/Tenofovir - Dosage and How to Use

How should Emtricitabine/Tenofovir be used?

  • Truvada is usually taken once daily, in combination with other antiretroviral agents, to achieve significant decrease in viral load.
  • Truvada can be administered with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole, do not crush, chew or break the tablet.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

  • Missing doses may make Truvada less effective and may also make the virus resistant to Truvada and other possible antiretroviral agents. This could make the virus harder to treat.
  • If you forgot to take the medication, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you remember a missed dose at the time of your next dose, omit the missed dose and take only your regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
  • If you vomit within 1 hour of administration, take or give another dose if possible.
