Patients with diabetes who fast during Ramadan are at risk of developing complications. However, if managed properly, fasting can provide benefits in terms of body composition and diabetes control. Dr Sueziani Zainudin, Consultant, Endocrinology Service, SKH, shared tips on reducing the risk of complications such as blood glucose monitoring, identifying the signs of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, ensuring adequate hydration and healthy diet, advice on physical activity and exercise, adjusting the treatment and having a trial run of fasting before Ramadan, and breaking fast when necessary for safety. Dr Sueziani also encouraged those who haven't been able to control their blood glucose levels well to take the first step of getting advice from their healthcare team and monitoring their blood glucose levels more frequently before Ramadan this year.
