The Education Office of Medicine Academic Clinical Programme (Medicine ACP) aims to prepare ourselves and the future generations of doctors to be ready to serve our patients and provide the best healthcare for those in our community. Led by the Academic Vice-Chair of Education, we seek to nurture clinicians with strong clinical medicine foundation who:

• Are versatile lifelong learners

• Have strong public ethos, compassion and professional integrity

• Embrace patient safety practices and support quality improvement

• Are trained to teach, mentor and lead

• Have the skills and abilities to differentiate into Clinician Scientists/Researchers, Clinical Educators and Master Clinicians

Undergraduate Medical Education

In order to groom and mentor future generations of doctors, our clinicians pave the way by actively participating in various educational ventures. Our education office receives a consistent stream of medical students from Duke-NUS Medical School, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. Each year, students from the 3rd, 4th and 5th year are attached to the medical departments for their clinical posting as part of their curriculum. With a wide range of medical specialties, our programme offers a challenging learning environment for the medical students. Our education office assists in coordinating and overseeing the teaching programmes during the medical students’ rotations to ensure that they are equipped with medical knowledge and bedside skills.

Graduate Medical Education

Residency programmes play an important training role in Medicine ACP. We have 11 Residency programmes residing under Medicine ACP that are successfully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-International (ACGME-I) and Joint Commission on Specialist Training (JCST). This is a mark of assurance that the quality of our curriculum is consistent, relevant and of good standard. This is vital in building the next generation of doctors who are not only passionate but well-versed in clinical skills and knowledge.

Faculty Development

In collaboration with Academic Medicine Education Institute (AM.EI), the education office aims to:

• Develop a systematic framework for the educational development of the faculty

• Allow for personal development of the individual faculty and development of educational expertise in the medical departments

• Develop common understanding and competency in medical education

• Develop communities of practice within educators in Medicine ACP

• Support and recognize educators in Medicine ACP

• Develop objective performance assessment in the education domain through the use of individual education portfolios and department educational dashboards

To cultivate continuous learning, our educators attend workshops and courses to obtain in-depth training to become effective education leaders and specialists. With the help from AM.EI, various courses are developed to assist the faculty to achieve three main competency levels, namely Level 1, 2 and 3. Each level must be completed in order to advance to the next. All educators are required to attain at least Level 1 competency through the AM.EI programme. Core faculty, responsible for developing and running structured course are expected to attain Level 2 and 3.

Through these three levels, the faculty will be introduced to useful key education principles, tools and best-shared practices to be applied in day-to-day operations. Continuous medical education of our clinicians is emphasized within Medicine ACP. The education team also works closely with the medical departments in organizing medical education conferences and forums for both our clinicians and patients.

Customised Faculty Development Workshop

[reduced]-Education-3_Faculty-Development-Workshop-interaction.jpg

Collaborating with educators from AM.EI and led by A/Prof Jason Chang, Director of Faculty Development, Medicine ACP and a team of enthusiastic educators, a customised workshop has been developed with the aim to synchronise assessment tools and teaching methods.

One feature of the workshop consists of a series of invigorating video adaptation of true cases. The videos were scripted by our clinician educators and will paint a clear guide on how to assess a student’s performance and how a faculty can grade the junior clinicians at their appropriate levels. Another key feature of this workshop is the reflective coursework component, where faculty are encouraged to critically reflect on how they can improve in assessment and feedback and demonstrate evidence of such improvements.

Medical Grand Round

Education 5_Medical Grand Rounds Quiz Team.jpg

The Medical Grand Round series, is a quarterly event where case reviews are presented by clinicians from various specialties. Each presenter would share their perspectives on the interventions made and the appropriate care for the patient based on their area of expertise. This event was established to foster inter-department collaboration and learning. To enrich and wrap up the session, we invite our Master Physicians of Internal Medicine to provide their perspective of the case.

To inject the element of fun, a Medical Jeopardy segment was introduced where three teams will answer questions related to the case review presented, in a quiz format. This event is attended by over 250 clinicians each time.

Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills (PACES) Preparatory Course

Education 6_PACES Prep Course.jpg

The Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills (PACES) is a clinical component of the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP) (UK) Examination. This assessment is required of all junior physicians who hope to enter higher specialist training.

Every year, the PACES Committee for Division of Medicine will organize a preparatory course in order to prime new batches of junior physicians for this examination. The three-day course emphasises on clinical bedside teaching which has been specially designed to adhere closely with the structure of the MRCP Examination. Candidates will be able to familiarise themselves with the techniques of history taking, physical examination and communication skills in a clinical setting. On the last day, a tailored mock examination will be conducted using patients with real conditions to provide candidates with a closer experience of the actual PACES exam.
