A/Prof Thomas Lew is a pioneering figure in Intensive Care Medicine in Singapore, widely credited with establishing and strengthening the sub-specialty of Neurointensive Care. Since 1995, he has been instrumental in re-orienting general intensive care practices toward neurocritical care priorities, developing specialized protocols for managing severe head injuries, spinal cord trauma, and aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhages with a focus on neuroprotection.
Beyond his clinical contributions, Prof Lew has held significant leadership roles, including serving as the Chairman Medical Board (CMB) of Tan Tock Seng Hospital from 2011 to 2019. In this capacity, he oversaw clinical governance and spearheaded transformative strategic initiatives, such as the re-integration of the TTSH Rehab Centre and the implementation of Primary Coordinating Specialists for complex outpatients. By elevating Allied Health and Pharmacy services to clinical divisions and reconstituting the Medical Board into a Clinical Board, Prof Lew has fundamentally shaped the hospital’s operational efficiency and its integrated linkages across the healthcare continuum.
