Michelle Chiang is an Assistant Professor of English and Medical Humanities at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). She coordinates the NTU Medical Humanities Research Cluster, co-leads the Medical Humanities Curriculum Working Group at the Lee Kong Chian (LKC) School of Medicine, and serves as the Deputy Director of NTU’s Centre for Health, Culture and Society. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on how stories shape ethical understandings of care. Her recent publications include “Prosthesis Refusal and the Ethics of Care in J. M. Coetzee’s Slow Man” (Journal of Medical Humanities, 2024) and “The Weight of Words: Human Relationality in End of Life Memoirs” (The Lancet, 2023). Her forthcoming monograph Mothering Care in the Contemporary Novel: Unknown Others, Imaginative Labour and the Ethics of Care (Edinburgh University Press, Oct 2026) explores how literary representations of mothering care offer insights into the ethical complexities of caring for distant others, particularly individuals whom caregivers know little about and for whom empathy alone may not lead to meaningful or responsible action.
