Programme Description

As Melvin is a philosopher by trade, his intention will be to offer a brief survey of the philosophical methodology and how it might be applied to the healthcare and biomedical domain. He will outline key issues and concerns in the philosophy of medicine and the main approaches that may be undertaken in bioethics. A general discussion will then be held about the relevance of a philosophical approach to medical practice, the medical humanities, etc.

 

Speakers Bio

Dr Kathryn Muyskens
Dr Kathryn Muyskens is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE). Originally from Colorado in the U.S., she came to Singapore in 2015 to pursue her PhD in Philosophy from Nanyang Technology University, graduating in 2019. She is a political philosopher and applied ethicist, with research interests in human rights, international politics and health, with particular concerns around questions of trust, information, and inequality in access to healthcare.

Ms Serene Ong
Ms Serene is a PhD student at the Centre for Biomedical Ethics, National University of Singapore. She is interested in ethical issues arising from emerging technologies such as genetic testing, precision medicine and AI. Her PhD research focuses on the disclosure of genetic risk information to family members.
