Critical Appraisal of Educational Literature

Synonym(s):

Date: Friday, 25 September 2026 | Time: 1120 - 1250 | Venue: Whitespace, Academia (SGH Campus)

Track Type: Workshop

Speaker(s):

Overview:

This practical hands-on workshop is for clinician educators who are interested to kickstart their qualitative research in healthcare professions education but feel overwhelmed by qualitative studies that they encounter as part of their literature search.

This workshop aims to provide a systematic approach to the critical appraisal of qualitative educational research, focussing on research performed in the healthcare setting. Participants will learn about the role of qualitative research in healthcare professions education and key concepts in why qualitative methodologies are appropriate for educational research. Participants will also be introduced to various critical appraisal frameworks such as the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist, the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR) guidelines, and the Reflexive Thematic Analysis Reporting Guidelines. The purpose of selecting these three guidelines is to introduce to participants the concept that different research paradigms require to be matched appropriately with different guidelines. Facilitators will also guide participants in a hands-on session of critical appraisal of an educational research journal article, using the SRQR guidelines.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the symposium, participants will be able to:

• Describe the role of qualitative research in health professions education
• Outline the different frameworks used to assess quality criteria in qualitative studies in health professions education
• Outline the differences between quantitative and qualitative research quality assessment criteria
• Perform critical appraisals of qualitative educational journal articles using a systematic framework

Target Audience:

Healthcare educators who are keen to understand how qualitative research in health professions is appraised by journals. Participants do not need to be actively embarking on their own qualitative research yet.
