The integration of simulation into healthcare education has proven to be a transformative tool for students, healthcare professionals and institutions. However, its potential impact when applied directly to patients and families remains largely unexplored. This workshop invites participants to reflect on how simulation can be reimagined as a pedagogical approach to empower patients and their families. It seeks to foster a shared understanding of this emerging field and to define actionable strategies for its effective development. The session will explore the contextual differences between clinician and patient learners, examine adaptable formats and methodologies, address ethical and emotional considerations and identify opportunities for co-creation. Ultimately, this workshop represents a foundational step toward building a structured framework for Simulation-Based Patient Education.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the core principles of clinical simulation and therapeutic patient education, recognising key differences in learner profiles, needs and objectives.
  2. Analyse the potential benefits, limitations and challenges of applying simulation-based methodologies to patient and family education.
  3. Reflect on the ethical, pedagogical and emotional considerations involved in Simulation-Based Patient Education.
  4. Brainstorm practical strategies, tools and formats for adapting simulation scenarios to diverse therapeutic and patient-centered contexts.
  5. Co-create initial concepts for a shared framework or roadmap to guide the integration of SBPE across various healthcare settings.
