Hairil is a Senior Consultant anaesthesiologist and perioperative physician at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He is passionate about improving the outcomes of patients undergoing surgery. In 2014, he led the redesign of preoperative processes in SGH by creating the Preoperative Assessment Centre, a one-stop centre to assess and optimize patients before surgeries. He has also championed multiple perioperative initiatives, such as the perioperative Patient Blood Management program, Prehabilitation prior to surgery, and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery pathways. These clinical programs have led to international and national recognitions.

Hairil currently leads the Appropriate and Value Based Healthcare efforts in SingHealth and SGH. He was awarded the “Distinguished Champion of Change Leader Award” and the “Distinguished Team Award” by SingHealth in 2022 and 2024 respectively, in recognition for his passion and effectiveness in driving healthcare transformation programs.

As a clinician researcher, his academic contributions were recognized at the national level in 2022 when he was awarded the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship by the Public Service Commission, Singapore. He is currently a Clinician Scientist at the national level, being awarded the HPHSR-CS award in 2023 by Singapore’s National Medical Research Council.
