Why a Life-Course Approach Matters

Synonym(s):

Building on the life-course approach, MCHRI examines how protective and adverse influences shape health and development over time. Maternal and child health faces increasingly complex challenges, including metabolic and mental health conditions, declining fertility, neurodevelopmental and immune-mediated disorders, childhood cancers and persistent health inequalities. Many of these challenges have origins early in life, yet healthcare delivery often remains reactive and fragmented across different stages of care.

Protective factors such as good nutrition, supportive relationships, quality healthcare, education and healthy environments help strengthen physical health, brain and cognitive development, mental wellbeing and social development. In contrast, maternal illness and stress, poor nutrition, environmental and climate-related risks, poverty and inequality can increase vulnerability and contribute to poorer outcomes.

Preconception, pregnancy and early childhood therefore represent critical windows of opportunity. A deeper understanding of disease mechanisms, earlier prediction of risk and timely intervention during these periods can deliver lasting benefits for individuals, families and subsequent generations.

Drawing on KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) expertise in obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatric, MCHRI brings together clinical care, translational science, population health, longitudinal research platforms, data science and artificial intelligence. Through clinician-scientist development and strategic partnerships, MCHRI translates discoveries into improved models of care, clinical innovations, evidence-based guidelines and health-system transformation.

This integrated approach positions MCHRI to help shift maternal and child healthcare from downstream, reactive management towards upstream prediction, prevention, precision intervention and coordinated life-course care, contributing to healthier lives, healthy ageing and a healthier nation.
