Foreword by Academic Chair

Emergency Medicine is the face and the shop-window of hospitals in the SingHealth cluster. The Emergency Departments (EDs) in SingHealth manage about half of Singapore’s total Emergency attendances and these include cases ranging from infancy to geriatrics, emergency resuscitation, trauma care, injuries and complex wounds, acute psychological care as well as end-of-life palliative care to address the varying needs of the population. The optimal management of complex, rapidly changing, multi-disciplinary conditions presented holds the key to making a difference within the golden hour.

Formed in January 2018, the Emergency Medicine Academic Clinical Program (ACP) draws together Emergency Medicine Specialists from Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Sengkang General Hospital (SKGH), Changi General Hospital (CGH) and the KK Children and Women Hospital (KKH). Collaborations amongst the four EDs and its various partners have borne enhanced patient outcomes supported by evidence-based guidelines and driven by analytics. Additionally, Emergency Medicine ACP also work in close cohesion with Emergency Specialty Nursing, Allied Health Professionals as well as hospital operations.

The established working relationships of the EDs in SingHealth encompassing patient service, education and research enable them to function as a common academic unit driving the continuous development of clinical care protocols for improved patient care in the ED. We hope to further strengthen existing collaborations and forge new partnerships through the 4 pillars of the Emergency Medicine ACP, namely, Clinical Services/Quality Improvement, Research, Education, Care Transformation and Innovation.
