The Everyday Heroism Of Medicine As A Professional Career

Synonym(s):

Date: 23 October, Friday | Time: 13:00 - 14:00 | Venue: Academia Auditorium

Speaker: Prof Jerry B. Vannatta

Programme Description:

This plenary lecture – in a manner that complements the Vannatta/Schleifer Keynote Presentation – examines the surprising fact of heroism in the quotidian activities of healthcare.  It focuses on the extraordinary actions of Dr. Andrew Sullivan in relation to the terrorist bombing in Oklahoma City in 1995 as a measure for the more day-to-day heroics of devoting oneself to the well-being of strangers.  It does so by examining the degree to which heroics – taking risks for the sake of others – contribute to the professional work and the fulfillments of a career in healthcare.
