Clinician Scientist - NMRC Singapore Translational Researcher (STaR) Investigator

Prof Jerry Chan is a Senior NMRC Clinician Scientist, a specialist in reproductive medicine at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), and Director of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI). He graduated from Trinity College Dublin, completed his specialist training in both the UK and Singapore, and obtained his PhD in fetal stem cell transplantation from Imperial College London. Upon returning to Singapore in 2005, he established the Experimental Fetal Medicine Group and has since secured over $100 million in competitive research funding as both Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator, with support from NMRC and other major funding bodies.

Prof Jerry has authored over 300 publications in leading journals such as Nature, Cell, Science, and The Lancet. His work has earned him numerous prestigious accolades, including being named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (2020), receiving the NMRC Singapore Translational Researcher Award (2023), and the National Medical Excellence Award’s National Outstanding Clinician Scientist Award (2024).

He has an outstanding track record in mentoring and developing talent, both through postgraduate supervision and involvement in research projects and grants. Since his appointment as Assistant Professor in late 2015, he has successfully supervised 16 PhD students. Among them, A/Prof Citra Mattar is now an NMRC Clinician Scientist Award (CSA) recipient and Research Director of NUH’s OBGYN Department, while two others have become full professors at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Hunan University. He has also mentored two Master of Clinical Investigation (MCI) trainees (including CS Resident Dr Ryan Lee and OBGYN consultant Dr Tan Tse Yeun), as well as three OBGYN Clinician Scientist Residents. In addition, he has mentored—and continues to mentor—a number of faculty members (from Associate Consultant to Senior Consultant) across a wide range of projects, including basic discovery research, cohort and epidemiological studies, randomised controlled trials, and experimental therapies.
