The students will go through 5-week posting in General Surgery and 1-week in Urology. They will be rotated to the various departments/ sub-specialties within General Surgery and will have opportunities to learn that doctors from various surgical sub-specialties will be called upon to co-manage patients with complex clinical problems and thereby understand how care is shared and interfaced between broad based and sub-specialty practices
Able to gather information from the patients, think through patient problems, and offer a primary diagnosis and a reasonable differential diagnosis.
To know the management principles and be able to come up with therapeutic decisions for Cat 1 Presentations/Conditions.
The students will go through 3-week posting in General Surgery/ Urology and Orthopaedics for their Integrated Care Block. They will be assigned to core tutors as well as clinical tutors who provide guidance and exposure to the necessary skills and knowledge of a practicing doctors and surgeons.
Describe the principles of integrated care, including the role it plays in patient management and any barriers to integrated care
Recall and describe the aetiology, characteristics, complications and prognosis of common and serious conditions and presentations
Recall and explain the indications, contraindications, complications and benefits of relevant diagnostic procedures
Describe medical and interventional treatments, their indications, contraindications, benefits and complications for the common and serious presentations
Describe strategies for prevention of harm or disease including education and lifestyle modifications
Gather an accurate history, and perform physical examination of the relevant systems and assessments of mental capacity where appropriate
Formulate differential diagnoses for the common and serious conditions with justification
Describe and interpret appropriate initial investigation(s), and apply them to aid diagnosis
Generate and explain holistic management plans using evidence-based medicine for both acute and chronic scenarios
Demonstrate the ability to manage uncertainty and complexity
Communicate respectfully and professionally, and resist reactionary behaviour
Recognise clinical presentations requiring: i) immediate emergency care (minutes to hours); ii) urgent or prompt care (days to two weeks)
Explain appropriate resuscitation (using ABCDE approach), immediate life support and treatment of acute presentations or conditions
Identify indications for surgery, therapeutic and endoscopic procedures
Recognise methods to optimise patient safety pre and post surgery and invasive procedures
Identify and prioritise medical, functional, social and emotional issues in complex patients
Identify and respect ethical, religious and cultural sensitivities
Demonstrate awareness of individual roles and work effectively and respectfully within the interdisciplinary team
Demonstrate awareness of ethical and legal issues surrounding autonomy, capacity and best interests arguments including for patients with altered mental states
Identify and uphold ethical and legal principles regarding confidentiality, disclosure and handling of patient data
