​Year 2 Clinical Skills Foundation Programme (CSFP)

Introduction

In this 4-week Clinical Skills Foundation Programme (CSFP), students are placed in a clinical setting where they can practise history taking and physical examination techniques under the supervision of their assigned core tutors. During this posting, the students will be rotated to Surgery (2 weeks) and Medicine (another 2 weeks).

Learning Objectives

  • Take an accurate clinical history after eliciting the chief presenting complaints
  • Conduct a competent physical examination of various organ systems and the whole patient
  • Establish a doctor patient relationship and maintain good bedside manners when interacting with patients
  • Appreciate the nature of the doctor-patient relationship and the importance of medical confidentiality, patient consent and patients' best interests
  • Communicate effectively with patients, their relatives and members of the healthcare team
  • Gain practical experience in oral presentation of the clinical summary

Year 3 Surgery Posting

Introduction

The Year 3 Surgery Posting is a 10-week clinical posting where surgical conditions and their approaches are introduced to medical students. Students are being embedded in their surgical teams in a rotation basis whilst having tutorials and centralized teachings so as to build on their clinical skills, exposure and knowledge.

Learning Objectives

  • To practise and refine the history and physical examination skills previously acquired during the clinical skills foundation course for the diagnosis of surgical patients, including such aspects as the severity of the condition, risk factors and complications
  • To understand the roles of specific investigations in the management of surgical patients
  • To understand the management of acute and chronic surgical conditions, as well as pre- and post-operative care
  • To understand the processes and structure within a surgical team, and to embed as much as possible into the team activities
  • To understand the processes and system within a surgical theatre, including scrubbing up for surgery
  • To appreciate the different scope of conditions and procedures performed in the major operating theatre, day surgery and in the outpatient clinics

Year 4 ENT Posting

Introduction

This 2-weeks rotation for ENT posting aims to expose students to Otolaryngology. Other than tutorials, students will be assigned to clinics where they can learn through seeing and examining patients in an actual clinical setting.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize various structures in a normal ear, nose, upper aerodigestive tract and neck
  • Perform basic examination of the ear, nose, throat and the neck, in particular otoscopy, anterior rhinoscopy, oral cavity examination, neck examination and tuning fork tests
  • Recognize common pathologies and spectrum of diseases seen in ENT, such as otitis externa, otitis media with effusion, hearing loss, allergic rhinitis, epistaxis, head & neck cancers etc.
  • Describe the management pathways of some common ENT conditions, such as allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, ear infections, various hearing loss, common head & neck cancers and stridor etc.

Year 5 Surgery & Student Internship Programme (SIP)

Introduction

The Year 5 Surgery SIP and Revision Posting is an 8- weeks posting. Students will first go through a series of workshops in preparation of the subsequent 4-weeks SIP posting where they function as a junior House Officer (HO) in their respective surgical teams under the supervision of a consultant. They will then be attending revision tutorials and lectures in the remaining 3 weeks.

Learning Objectives

  • Consolidate skills in history taking, physical examination, reaching an appropriate clinical diagnosis and further discuss on the appropriate investigations and relevant management of common surgical conditions
  • Understand the overall management of a wide range of surgical conditions and diseases
  • Be familiar with commonly use treatment modalities for surgical conditions, including pharmacological agents, radiological interventions and surgical operations
  • Understand the role of multidisciplinary team management in complex surgical diseases to provide a holistic care for patients
  • Understand palliative care principles in managing recurrent or terminal malignancies or conditions in the practice of surgery
  • Gain understanding in the management of common surgical emergencies, including acute abdomen, bleeding GITs etc.
  • Attain basic skills in performing surgical procedures including suturing, knot tying, basic bedside procedures and hand washing and gowning steps in the operating theatre
  • Equip with practical skills required of a surgical intern
  • Be able to communicate well with patients, relatives and team
  • Learn to balance time for learning and revision of surgical knowledge while at work as an intern
