Learning ​Objectives

  1. To practice and refine the history and physical examination skills previously acquired during the clinical skills foundation course for the diagnosis of surgical patients, including such aspects as the severity of the condition, risk factors and complications.

  2. To understand the roles of specific investigations in the management of surgical patients.

  3. To understand the management of acute and chronic surgical conditions, as well as pre- and post-operative care.

  4. To understand the processes and structure within a surgical team, and to embed as much as possible into the team activities.

  5. To understand the processes and system within a surgical theatre, including scrubbing up for surgery.

  6. To appreciate the different scope of conditions and procedures performed in the major operating theatre, day surgery and in the outpatient clinics.
