Foundations of Learning and Teaching

You became a healthcare professional to care for patients. Somewhere along the way, you also became an educator. This course is about doing that second job as deliberately as you do the first.

It is built for every kind of educator: medical, dental, nursing, allied health, pharmacy, as well as colleagues in non-clinical roles. You do not need a background in education theory. You need about an hour, and one teaching situation of your own to think about as you go.

Course Overview

MODULE 1: Your role as a healthcare educator
Why teaching is part of your professional practice rather than an extra duty. The competencies effective educators share, and where you sit on the AMEI Educator Pathway today.

MODULE 2: Designing with the end in mind
Start from what learners should be able to do, then work backwards to the assessment and the teaching. You will write and test a real outcome of your own.

MODULE 3: Making learning theories work for you
Three ideas that explain why some teaching lands and some does not: how adults learn, how learners build on what they already know, and how much they can process at once.

MODULE 4: Choosing the right teaching strategy
Eight practical strategies, from the One-Minute Preceptor to structured debriefing, and a three-question checklist for picking one when you have five minutes and a patient waiting.

MODULE 5: Assessment for learning
The difference between assessing to guide learning and assessing to judge it, and feedback models that fit into the two or three minutes you have between patients.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Describe your roles and responsibilities as a healthcare educator, using the AMEI Educator Development Framework.
• Write clear, measurable learning outcomes for a teaching session you deliver.
• Align your teaching activities and your assessment to those outcomes.
• Select teaching strategies that suit your outcome, your learner's level, and the time you actually have.
• Give feedback that learners can act on, using models built for busy clinical settings.

Course Fee

This online course is chargeable at S$450. Fees listed are subjected to prevailing GST rates. Please note that the invoice will be sent upon completion of the course.

Enrollment Period

The course is open all year round except March, as we use this time to update and recalibrate the content.

Please download your certificate before the course closes, as you will not be able to do so afterwards.
