APIPEC Healthcare Team Challenge

Overview:

The HealthCare Team Challenge (HCTC) is an interactive interprofessional education (IPE) activity designed to strengthen collaboration among healthcare professionals and learners from different disciplines. Modern healthcare increasingly requires coordinated teamwork to manage complex patient needs. HCTC provides a structured, case-based environment where participants work together to analyse patient scenarios, develop care plans, and demonstrate collaborative decision-making. The activity highlights the value of shared perspectives, communication, and mutual respect across professional boundaries.

Participants are organised into small interprofessional teams comprising members from different healthcare backgrounds (e.g., medicine, nursing, allied health, and pharmacy). Each team analyses a clinic case, identifies key patient issues, and proposes a collaborative management plan. Teams then present their approach to a panel of judges and peers, followed by feedback and discussion.

The HCTC originated in North America through initiatives by the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education and has since been adopted internationally as a practical approach to IPE. Evidence from interprofessional education research in the field of Interprofessional Education shows that team-based learning activities improve understanding of professional roles, communication skills, and collaborative practice, ultimately contributing to safer and more patient-centred healthcare.
