Overview:

This interactive workshop aims to provide healthcare professionals with a practical introduction to OSCE planning fundamentals. Participants will gain awareness of key principles and a structured framework for developing OSCEs in their own contexts.

The 90min-session focuses on critical decision points in OSCE development:
1) understanding blueprinting principles,
2) recognising elements of effective station design,
3) identifying common implementation challenges and
4) exploring approaches to delivering constructive feedback to learners.

Attendees will work through a practical framework covering station design basics, marking criteria essentials, and standardised assessment approaches. The workshop addresses frequently encountered challenges such as examiner consistency through collaborative problem-solving.

By the end of the session, participants will have a clear roadmap and practical resources to begin OSCE development in their own institutions, with realistic expectations about the additional learning and preparation required for successful implementation.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Construct comprehensive OSCE blueprints aligned with curriculum objectives and competency frameworks, incorporating appropriate station distribution and weighting considerations
2. Develop valid, reliable OSCE stations with authentic clinical scenarios, standardised candidate instructions, and appropriate resource requirements
3. Create criterion-referenced marking rubrics that ensure consistent, objective candidate evaluation whilst minimising assessor bias
4. Implement effective calibration processes and quality assurance mechanisms to enhance inter-rater reliability and maintain assessment standards

Target Audience:

Advanced Practice Nurses and healthcare educators with clinical assessment responsibilities, particularly those with fewer than five years' experience in OSCE development and implementation. The workshop is designed for professionals seeking to enhance their clinical assessment competencies and contribute to educational excellence within their institutions.
