Champion debriefers will systematically review the literature and deconstruct the popular debriefing tools, providing strategies to determine the successful debriefing choices, and exploring whether the simulation topic and content reflects which debriefing tool should be used and why. Several popular debriefing tools have been identified and utilized by simulationists across the globe.  Examples include:  DASH-SV=Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare- Student Version; DES=Debriefing Experience Scale; DML=Debriefing for Meaningful Learning.  Recent literature has suggested that not just anyone can guide a debrief and no one tool fits all simulation scenarios.  How are debriefers being trained? How and why do simulationists choose specific debriefing tools?  How do we ensure that learners in SBE are not leaving the simulation-based experience traumatized?

By the end of the faculty development debriefing session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Deconstruct a minimum of three (3) specific debriefing tools for the learner’s simulation experiential event;
  2. Identify challenges in selecting the best debriefing tool for specific simulation-based education events;
  3. Determine strategies to select the debriefing tool of choice, reflecting on the participant’s reasoning for their choice.
