Denosumab - What is it for

Denosumab is a medicine given to prevent excessive bone loss. It is used to increase bone mass for the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis, as well as to reduce cancer-related bone pain.

Denosumab - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Denosumab cause?

  • Muscle, back, bone and joint pain
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased cholesterol levels
  • Nausea or vomiting, constipation
  • Slight tiredness

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Excessive muscle cramping
  • Giddiness or confusion
  • Excessive skin dryness, irritation or rashes
  • Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
  • Fever, pain upon urination, gum pain or gum bleeding
  • Severe nausea or vomiting or abdominal pain
  • Jaw pain or tooth ache

Before taking Denosumab, what precautions must I follow?

  • Maintain good oral hygiene. Inform your dentist that you are on Denosumab so that appropriate precautions can be taken.
  • For females, use effective birth control during treatment and for at least 5 months after the last dose of Denosumab. Inform your doctor if you intend to get pregnant or breastfeed.
  • Ensure that you are taking sufficient calcium and vitamin D while you are on Denosumab.

How should Denosumab be used?

It is a subcutaneous injection which is given at the upper arm, upper thigh or abdomen. You may need to receive one injection every 4 weeks or 6 months depending on your requirements.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Denosumab, receive it as soon as possible by rescheduling an administration date with your clinic.

​As​ Denosumab exists under two different brand names i.e. Xgeva®, Prolia®, do note the brand that you are currently taking. You should not switch between the two brands unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
